Developing joy.

Social, physical, and cognitive growth are unique to each child. To your child. St. James Preschool is committed to building on, developing, and expanding the unique abilities of each child within an atmosphere of joy. The joy of friendship. The joy of growing. The joy of learning.

The small school that makes a big difference

Founded in 1963, St. James Preschool has been a much-loved fixture of San Francisco’s Inner Richmond neighborhood for over 60 years. We are a nonsectarian and nonprofit preschool, providing quality education to children from ages 2 to 5. As a small school with an exceptional child-to-teacher ratio, we are dedicated to a developmental child-centered philosophy that fosters personal growth and respects a child’s spirit.

Our programs

Children are grouped by age in three engaging and responsive classroom environments, with most starting in our twos program. We offer an optional extended day schedule to meet the needs of working parents.

“Thank you St. James Preschool for being a consistent, reliable, nourishing, kind, and irreplaceable partner for us these past vital years of childhood. You are far more than just preschool. Not only have you taught and loved our children, you have taught us and helped us grow and become better parents and improved adults.”
St. James Parent

The children are as excited as we are about the enrichment activities we offer as part of the regular curriculum at St. James Preschool.

Science in nature

Our preK class heads to the Marin Headlands once a month for Nature Connections with Lauryn. This hands-on science program engages their sense of wonder and guides their natural curiosity, and was the first of its kind for a preschool in San Francisco.

Literacy at SJP

Our Great Books Project is a key component of our strong literacy program, and unique to the school. This highly curated home-lending library exposes the children to more than 50 exemplary picture books every year, with a focus on hidden gems.

Music & movement

Our children are lucky to have the inimitable Teacher Barb as their musical guide. With the mix of beats and rhythms she brings into our classrooms — rock, blues, hip hop, and nursery rhymes — they learn about themselves and the world through playful movement and song.
